The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart arose from the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. She beheld the Merciful Savior with his broken and flaming heart exposed. She heard the words "Behold the Heart which has so loved humanity, but is met with indifference, ingratitude and scorn." Jesus asked her to establish a Feast in honor of his heart to follow the Octave day of Corpus Christi - tying devotion to the Sacred Heart with devotion to the Eucharist. The Broken Heart of the Savior is the ultimate symbol of God's Love for the human race. Through his heart, broken and bleeding, Jesus reveals the depths of the Father's Love and beseeches us to love in the same measure: "Love one another as I have loved you."
